An Enormous Achievement
How Rafe turned everything around in just ten weeks
“You have managed to do in a few hours what the school failed to do in 5 years!” - Mum
I was approached by a concerned parent just 10 weeks before the first Maths GCSE paper. While achieving a Grade 4 could be possible, there was a reality that this would be tricky in such a short period of time. Particularly as I was fully booked for regular lessons.
Between 24th March and 8th June, Rafe and I managed to squeeze in just 13 hours 45 minutes of face-to-face Maths tutoring. I knew from our first lesson that he was not a Grade 2 student. This is what his February mock had shown and his school had reinforced.
“I struggled with everything to do with Maths. I just didn’t get it.” - Rafe
Rafe was never a Grade 2 student, I just had to show him that. Encouragement and belief quickly turned into determination and a huge amount of targeting revision.
Deciding which previously inaccessible topics to teach was key to maximise Rade’s change of grasping the concept quickly. Understanding which areas of Maths instinctively made sense to him and which caused confusion and panic was essential. The more time we spent linking similar together, the more Rafe’s confidence grew. Suddenly what felt like an endless list of completely different topics, became a web of similarities and connections. The Maths papers which for so long had felt daunting, now felt accessible.
“I really started to believe I could do this.” - Rafe
